McIlroy posted a share of fourth place at the Genesis Scottish Open after a two-under 68 in the final round.
McIlroy had putted well all year, but this week it was the reason he didn't really challenge for the victory at 63rd in SG: Putting. The good news is that he was second in both SG: Off-the-Tee and SG: Around-the-Green. Overall, it was a good bounce back for McIlroy following the massive disappointment of missing a pair of short putts late that cost him a U.S. Open. He will be on a revenge tour next week at the Open Championship looking to end his major drought. McIlroy owns seven top-six finishes at the Open.
McIlroy finished in solo second just one shot behind Bryson DeChambeau after a one-under 69 in the final round of the U.S. Open.
This is going to be a tough one for McIlroy to come back from. He began the day just three back of DeChambeau and was hoping to win his first major in a decade. The Northern Irishman immediately holed a birdie putt on No. 1 and kicked his game into gear. After a brutally bad break that led to birdie on the par-5 5th, he surged into the lead with birdies at 9, 10, 12 and 13. McIlroy seemed to tighten up when he launched a ball over the green at 15 that led to bogey and then inexplicably missed three-foot putts on holes 16 and 18. It's hard to believe that a four-time major champion could make those kinds of mistakes down the stretch, but it shows you just how hard and how much pressure there is to win one of these. McIlroy is in the field for the Travelers Championship next week, but it wouldn't surprise to see him try to get away and reset looking forward to the Open Championship next month at Royal Troon.
McIlroy recorded a four-over 76 in the final round of the Memorial Tournament to finish tied for 15th place.
McIlroy failed to get anything going Sunday with just a pair of birdies to go along with four bogeys and a double bogey as he was unable to post a round in the 60s all tournament. He led the field for the week in driving distance and although he didn't stand out statistically in any other area, he did gain shots in every strokes gained category. McIlroy has posted a top-15 in each of his last five starts.
McIlroy finished in a share of fourth place at the RBC Canadian Open after a six-under 64 in the final round.
McIlroy has turned into an honorary Canadian with his support of this event and how well he has played in it with wins in two of the last three editions, including right here at Hamilton in 2019. McIlroy had stretches of golf throughout the week where it looked like he was going to be the one to beat, but he was unable to put it all together. He did not rank inside the top-10 in any strokes gained category. McIlroy has finished 1st-1st-T12-T4 in his last four starts. He will tee it up at the Memorial before looking to break that long major drought at the U.S. Open.
