McIlroy posted a one-under 71 during the final round of THE PLAYERS Championship to finish in a four-way tie for 46th.
It looked like McIlroy wasn't going to make it to the weekend after opening his title defense with a two-over 74 in the first round, but he barely made the two-over cut line after his birdie on the par-5 ninth, his final hole of the second round. He couldn't climb the leaderboard over the next two days, and his final round was his most chaotic, as his five birdies were countered by double bogeys on the first and 13th holes. It's likely that McIlory was not at 100 percent, given his uncertainty of even teeing off at THE PLAYERS due to a back injury he sustained at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. He's not listed in the field for the Valspar Championship next week, and given his back injury, it's not clear how many tournaments McIlroy will participate in before The Masters that kicks off April 9.
McIlroy (back) isn't expected to travel to THE PLAYERS Championship until Wednesday, Todd Lewis of Golf Channel reports.
McIlroy indicated to Lewis that his back spasms are still being stubborn and has delayed his trip to TPC Sawgrass until Wednesday as he gets treatment in South Florida. The defending champion withdrew prior to the start of the third round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational after tweaking his lower back during a practice session. Fantasy managers should exercise caution with McIlroy for the time being.
McIlroy (back) remains listed in the field for THE PLAYERS Championship this week.
McIlroy withdrew from this past week's Arnold Palmer Invitational ahead of his third-round tee time due to muscle spasms in his lower back, but the early exit was deemed precautionary as he looks ahead to defending his titles at THE PLAYERS Championship and the Masters Tournament.
McIlroy withdrew before the third round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational due to a back injury, PGA Tour Communications reports.
It is unknown how severe McIlroy's back injury is, but what is certain is that he will withdraw from the Arnold Invitational with a score of four-under par across three completed rounds in the tournament. McIlroy enters THE PLAYERS Championship next week with a questionable status, and that would be an unfortunate development for him as the reigning champion.
