McIlroy fired a 10-under-par 62 in the final round of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship to finish in a tie for third place.
McIlroy had a lot of ground to make up going into the final day, and he ended up nearly making it all back. The 36-year-old carded an eagle and eight birdies, including five straight to start the back-nine, to post 24-under-par in the clubhouse. Unfortunately, McIlroy would end up being just one shot shy of joining a playoff between Aaron Rai and Tommy Fleetwood. Nevertheless, this gives McIlroy some great momentum heading to the DP World Tour Championship where he will look to hold off Marco Penge and notch a seventh Race to Dubai title. The 20-time DP World Tour winner has won the season-ending event on three different occasions, including last year.
