Ludvig Aberg Ludvig Aberg
RANK 5 | OWGR 6.43
Aberg will undergo surgery this week to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee, Adam Schupak of USA Today reports.
Aberg's knee injury goes back to May, when he withdrew from the Wells Fargo Championship. He should be able to hit golf balls three-to-four weeks after, likely pushing his earliest return date to sometime in October. Fortunately, Aberg will likely play this fall, albeit on a limited basis.
Aberg closed with a one-under 71 on Sunday at the BMW Championship to finish in a tie for second place.
Aberg began the week slow with a 72, but bounced back with a nine-under 63 in round two to get right back in contention. Aberg went 71-71 over the weekend to ultimately come up one shot shy of Keegan Bradley, however. It was Aberg's third runner-up finish of the season. The Swede ranked top-five in Denver in SG: Off-the-Tee, SG: Around-the-Green and SG: Putting. He will be the No. 5 seed for the TOUR Championship and start at five-under-par and five strokes back of FedExCup leader Scottie Scheffler.
Aberg recorded a one-over 72 in the final round of the Olympics to finish tied for 18th place.
Aberg began the day in the top-10 and with a chance at a medal if he went low, but he was only able to card a pair of birdies and three bogeys to fall out of contention. He had a strong week with his iron play, ranking sixth in SG: Approach. Aberg currently sits sixth in the FedExCup Standings, although he enters lacking some momentum.
Aberg faded to a share of fourth place after struggling to a three-over 73 on Sunday at the Genesis Scottish Open.
Aberg took a two-shot lead into the final round, but did not look like the player on Sunday that we saw in the first three rounds. Sunday was the lowest strokes gained round of Aberg's short professional career. That's really inexcusable for a player of his caliber who has already converted a 54-hole lead into a win. Aberg will have to shake it off and focus forward on his Open Championship debut next week.
